Strathmore House is a drug and alcohol free transitional living facility that accommodates single men, single women and families. Living facilities include individual rooms and dorms for single men and women. For families, home is one large room when they first come to Strathmore House. The council is set to adopt a permanent nine-person task force to address housing and homelessness in Spokane Valley to comply with state law. It will include two people with lived experience of being unhoused, a Spokane Valley council member and a Spokane Regional Health District representative, among others.

The board will hear a presentation about the district’s Native education program, which lists goals and outcomes of its program to improve the education of Indigenous students. The program emphasized outdoor education, project-based learning Strathmore House Review and culture. The presentation slides say the program has improved graduation rates by 20%, from 67% in 2016 to 87% in 2024. The board will host a hearing for the public to comment on a proposed general obligation bond that could pay for aging infrastructure not covered by a recent tax increase measure that voters have struck down. A bond is essentially a promise to debtors that the district will be able to raise the funds to cover anticipated spending. Haley’s appointments also include seating non-voting board members on committees to offer their opinions and perspective, a positive change from a board structure that usually doesn’t offer them many opportunities to offer input.

They’ll specifically discuss the $230,000 of taxpayer money the Valley spent on investigations and other actions into controversies involving the council member as he enters his second year. Those controversies include alleged harassment of city staff, allegations Merkel has denied. Since becoming a Strathmore House Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through Strathmore House Staff.

As a preteen, she was given freedom without the tools to navigate it. Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10. Already struggling with little support, five months into her pregnancy, Fatima lost her brother to suicide. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups. 2024 was an eventful year for freshman City Council Member Al Merkel, and his colleagues want to talk about it!

She is drawing every day to practice her skills while raising her lively, talkative and energetic little boy. Through classes at Strathmore House, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships. Strathmore House also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Life felt so intensely depressing that Fatima feared she would have a miscarriage. Her living situation with family was chaotic and unsafe all throughout her pregnancy, but at 16—with little support or encouragement—she gave birth to her son Julian. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and became a mom at age 16.

This closure is coming after  the city gave $1.2 million to Strathmore House in August of 2024 — paid for with money accumulated through Brown’s cost savings measures at the Trent Shelter — to keep their doors open. It’s Council Member Jonathan Bingle’s first meeting chairing the Urban Experience Committee, which we were informed of via a meme sent in by a city council staffer this morning. Bingle will be welcomed by a couple big pieces of information that are scheduled to be covered in the meeting.And remember, you can now testify for two minutes on agenda items at committee meetings! The contracts in the consent agenda tonight will be paid for with money remaining from the original $800,000 dip into 1590 funds, city spokesperson Erin Hut told RANGE. Hut added that no additional draws from 1590 funds for inclement weather beds would be necessary. Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods.

By age 14, Janelle was pregnant, and that same boyfriend became abusive, leaving her with bruises make-up couldn’t cover. By the time Joseph was born, Janelle had stopped going to school.

At the time, Edith was experiencing depression while facing the economic challenges of being a teen mom. After a friend introduced her to Strathmore House, Edith felt the encouragement she needed to move forward with her life and build a healthy future for herself and her son. In a year’s time, she was able to cover her expenses and begin saving for a down payment for a house.

Contract Attorneys provide legal representation while a full time Paralegal and Legal Advocate provide support and case management services. Strengths-based, client centered, and trauma-informed goal setting, resource referrals, and service linkages that emphasize housing, health, and self-sufficiency. According to the committee agenda, Volunteers of America (VOA) are planning to close the Strathmore House by the end of this June, leaving up to 100 women on the streets. They’ll be presenting information on the wind-down process to the council today.

The BOCC will discuss the scope of a task force to address “forever chemicals” contamination on the West Plains, which residents of that area have been agitating for in recent months. The task force was proposed by County Commissioner Chris Jordan late last year. West Plains groundwater has been contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances for decades but local residents have only known about it for the last seven years.
